Driving in Ireland: Adventures on the Backroads

If you’re planning a road trip through Ireland — or joining one of our private tours — you’re in for more than just breathtaking views. Driving in Ireland, especially on its rural country roads, is an experience all of its own. And right now, with sowing season kicking off around St. Patrick’s Day, you’re bound to share the road with plenty of tractors and farming machinery.

These quiet country lanes, winding through rolling green hills and past stone-walled fields, are where the real Irish adventures happen.

A Memorable Moment on the West Coast 🚜

One of our favorite tour memories took place during harvest season on the west coast of Ireland. Imagine this: you’re driving along a narrow country road with ancient stone walls on either side, feeling like you’ve stepped into a postcard. Then—suddenly—a massive tractor appears, hauling heavy machinery, heading straight toward you.

In most places, you’d simply pull off to the side. But this was Ireland, and there was no “side” to speak of. Just a hedge of brambles and a solid stone wall.

With steady nerves and a good dose of laughter, we gently edged as close as possible to the wall while the tractor passed with mere inches to spare. It was a moment of heart-pounding teamwork, good humor, and a memory we still talk about today. Who needs off-roading when you’ve got Irish backroads during harvest season?

Driving in Ireland: What to Expect

If you’re new to driving in Ireland or thinking about exploring the island behind the wheel, here are a few quick tips:

  • Drive on the left (the “correct” side, as we like to joke).
  • Country roads can be very narrow, often with no shoulder—stay alert.
  • Tractors and livestock are common, especially in spring and autumn.
  • Take it slow and enjoy the scenery—you’re never in too much of a rush here.
