Private guide and flexible route – Enjoy a more personal experience than a large coach tour, with time for questions, photos, coffee stops and conversation.

Easy day trip from Dublin – Start and finish at your Dublin hotel, airport, cruise port or preferred central location.

Detailed Itinerary

Morning – Dublin Pickup and Journey to the Boyne Valley

Your private Newgrange day tour begins with pickup in Dublin. After meeting your guide, we leave the city behind and travel north through the countryside towards the Boyne Valley, a landscape filled with ancient monuments, old monastic sites, riverside settlements and stories stretching back thousands of years.

As we drive, your guide will introduce the wider history of Ireland’s Ancient East: the Neolithic people who built the great passage tombs, the early Christian communities who later shaped the region, and the medieval monasteries that connected Ireland with Europe.

This is the advantage of a private tour: the day is not just transport from one attraction to another. It becomes a story, linking each stop into a deeper understanding of Ireland’s past.

Late Morning – Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and Newgrange

Our main stop is Brú na Bóinne, the World Heritage landscape that includes Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. The official visitor centre is the starting point for visits to Newgrange and Knowth, and visitors are brought to the monuments by shuttle bus as part of the guided tour system.

At the visitor centre, you will learn about Neolithic life, ritual, astronomy and stone carving before continuing to the monument itself. Newgrange was built around 3200 BC, placing it firmly in the middle Neolithic period.

Standing outside the great circular mound, you will see the white quartz façade, the decorated entrance stone and the surrounding kerbstones. Inside, the narrow passage leads to a central chamber beneath the mound. One of Newgrange’s most famous features is its winter solstice alignment: the roof-box channels sunrise light along the passage to illuminate the chamber around the shortest days of the year.

This is often the most memorable moment of the day: a chance to stand inside a monument built over five millennia ago and imagine the knowledge, belief and organisation required to create it.

Lunch or Coffee Stop – Boyne Valley, Drogheda or Slane

After Newgrange, we pause for lunch or coffee. Depending on timing, your guide may recommend a local café, a traditional pub, or a scenic stop in the Boyne Valley area.

This break is also a good moment to ask questions about what you have seen at Newgrange. Was it a tomb, a temple, a calendar, a ritual site, or all of these things at once? The mystery is part of the experience.

Afternoon Stop – Monasterboice Monastic Site

Monasterboice high cross and round tower in County Louth. Private day tour from Dublin to Newgrange

Next, we travel to Monasterboice, one of the great early Christian sites of County Louth. The monastic settlement was founded by St Boetius, also known as St Buite, and its round tower is one of the tallest of its kind in Ireland at 30.5 metres, even though its conical cap is missing.

Monasterboice is especially famous for its high crosses. Muiredach’s Cross, also known as the South Cross, stands 5.5 metres high and is carved with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The Tall Cross, also called the West Cross, reaches 6.5 metres and is described by Heritage Ireland as the tallest high cross in Ireland.

Your guide will help bring the carvings to life. These crosses were more than decoration: they were stone storytelling, teaching biblical scenes in a world where most people could not read. The quiet graveyard, ruined churches and round tower make this one of the most atmospheric stops of the day.

Final Heritage Stop – Old Mellifont Abbey

Our final major stop is Old Mellifont Abbey, a peaceful ruined monastery that marks a major turning point in Irish religious history. Mellifont was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by St Malachy of Armagh with help from monks sent by St Bernard of Clairvaux.

The most striking surviving feature is the two-storey octagonal lavabo, where monks once washed before meals. You can also explore the remains of the chapter house, cloister area and monastic buildings, while imagining Mellifont as it once was: a powerful medieval religious community connected to the wider European world.

Mellifont’s story did not end in the Middle Ages. The abbey later became connected with major events in Irish history, including the Treaty of Mellifont in 1603 and the Battle of the Boyne period.

This stop gives the tour a satisfying historical arc: from Neolithic ritual at Newgrange, to early Christian art at Monasterboice, to medieval monastic Europe at Mellifont Abbey.

Late Afternoon – Return to Dublin

After a full day exploring Ireland’s Ancient East, we return to Dublin. On the way back, your guide can answer questions, suggest restaurants or pubs for your evening, and help you connect what you have seen with the wider story of Ireland.

Drop-off is at your Dublin hotel, airport, port or agreed location.

Why Visit Newgrange on a Private Tour?

Newgrange is one of Ireland’s must-see ancient sites, but it is also a place where timing and logistics matter. Tickets are limited, access is controlled through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, and entry to the monument is by guided tour only.

A private tour makes the day smoother. You do not need to organise transport, study rural bus routes, manage timing between sites or rush with a large group. Instead, your guide plans the route around your official Newgrange tour time and adds context before and after each stop.

A private tour also makes the ticket process easier. Newgrange tickets are limited and tied to specific entry times, so the day needs to be planned carefully. When you contact us in advance, we can check ticket availability, purchase tickets for you where possible, and organise the route so your visit to Newgrange, Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey flows comfortably.

This is also a more personal way to travel. You can slow down for photos, ask more questions, focus on archaeology, mythology, Christian history or local life, and enjoy the journey at a pace that suits you.

What Makes Each Stop Special?

Newgrange – Ireland’s Ancient Wonder

Newgrange is part of Brú na Bóinne, a World Heritage landscape within a bend of the River Boyne. Heritage Ireland describes Brú na Bóinne as Ireland’s richest archaeological landscape, famous for the passage tombs of Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth, built around 3200 BC.

The monument is world famous for its winter solstice alignment. At sunrise around the winter solstice, light enters through the roof-box and travels down the passage into the chamber, a feature that has fascinated archaeologists, historians and visitors alike.

Monasterboice – High Crosses and Early Christian Ireland

Monasterboice offers a different chapter of Irish history. Here, the focus shifts from Neolithic builders to early Christian monks, carved scripture and the round towers that became symbols of Ireland’s monastic landscape. The site includes Muiredach’s Cross, the Tall Cross, church ruins and a round tower associated with monastic wealth and protection during periods of attack.

Mellifont Abbey – Medieval Ireland Meets Europe

Mellifont Abbey introduced the Cistercian order to Ireland and brought a new European monastic style to the country. Founded in 1142, it became one of the most important religious houses in medieval Ireland. Its octagonal lavabo remains one of the most distinctive monastic features in the Boyne Valley.

Important Booking Note – Newgrange Tickets

Newgrange is one of Ireland’s most popular ancient sites, and the number of tickets available each day is limited. Access is controlled through the official Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, and entry to Newgrange is only possible with a timed ticket and guided visit.
